Yin and Yang

Have you ever heard the expression, “Too much of a good thing is a bad thing?” When you think about it, this truth is self-evident.

Everyone knows that food is essential for life, but overeating can lead to significant health issues. Similarly, spending time by yourself can help you recharge, but if you don’t have enough human contact, you’ll become lonely or isolated. And exercise is clearly an important part of living a healthy life, but too much exercise can cause injuries or other health issues.

All of these examples reflect the delicate and important balance between Yin and Yang, which exist everywhere in nature. In Chinese Medicine and Qi Gong, this balance plays an important role in all aspects of your health and well-being. Fortunately, there are some simple yet powerful ways to balance these energies within yourself.

In this blog, we discuss how Yin and Yang work within the human body. We also share five core benefits of balancing your Yin and Yang energies.

What are Yin and Yang?

In Chinese Medicine and Qi Gong, Yin and Yang refer to the interconnected and opposite forces that exist throughout the natural world. It’s based on the principle that everything that exists is part of duality. In other words, nothing can exist unless it also has an opposing reference point to give it meaning and balance.

For example, daytime can only exist because night also exists. Hot only has meaning because we know that cold exists. And the idea of good can’t possibly be discussed without also referring to the idea of bad. These are just a few examples, but anything and everything has its Yang and Yin qualities.

In the human body, Yang and Yin manifest in countless ways. Sleeping and wakefulness, listening and speaking, being alone and being with others are all ways in which Yin and Yang are present within you. To be healthy, you need to have both Yin and Yang in equal balance. In fact, most health ailments are related to your Yin and Yang falling out of balance in one way or another.

Below, you’ll learn about five specific benefits of balancing your Yang and Yin.

1. Better Sleep

When Yang and Yin energies are in harmony, it’s easier to sleep soundly throughout the night. Instead of tossing and turning under your covers, you’re able to enjoy deep peace and relaxation when it’s time to go to bed.

Sleep is a Yin activity, so it requires that you have strong Yin energy. Therefore, if you’re having a difficult time sleeping, it might mean that you’re Yin deficient. A few common causes of Yin deficiency include drinking too much caffeine, not exercising enough, or having excess heat (a fever).

2. More Energy

If you feel awake and full of energy during the day, it’s a clear indication that your Yin and Yang energies are well balanced.

Not surprisingly, how you feel during the day is very dependent on how well you sleep at night. This is a clear example of how Yang and Yin energies are connected! Being active during the day is a manifestation of Yang energy. However, in order to have Yang, you must also have strong Yin (Sleep!).

Based on this, it’s easy to see how Yang and Yin support one another. Good sleep leads to feeling more energized during the day, and being energized and active during the day leads to better sleep. Therefore, feeling sleepy at night and energetic during the day indicates a healthy balance between Yin and Yang.

3. Stronger Immune System

When Yin and Yang are in balance, your entire energy system is stronger and healthier. This means that your body has more resilience to protect itself against pathogenic Qi (i.e. sickness or illness).

In Chinese Medicine and Qi Gong, this protective energy is called Wei Chi. For your Wei Chi to be strong, you need to have both Yin and Yang in balance and harmony. This is why it’s easier to get sick when you’re living out of balance and not giving your body what it needs. When you regain harmony between Yin and Yang, however, it becomes much easier to maintain a strong and healthy immune system

4. Internal Harmony

When Yin and Yang are balanced, you feel a sense of internal peace. Instead of feeling restless, you can relax and experience a soothing feeling of self-love and self-acceptance. You feel centered, calm, and confident. This allows you to not crave external attention to validate your sense of worthiness.

5. External Harmony

In addition to feeling a sense of internal harmony, balancing your Yin and Yang allows you to effortlessly find harmony with the world around you. This means that you’re able to navigate the world with grace and confidence.

Individuals who have balanced Yang and Yin energies are able to deeply listen to what others are saying (Yin). They’re also able to speak their mind and stand up for themselves when necessary (Yang). A person with a Yin or Yang deficiency may struggle with one or both of these.

For example, someone who is Yang deficient might have a hard time finding their voice in social situations. This can lead to intense social anxiety or fear of speaking. Unfortunately, they may have good ideas that are never heard.

On the other hand, those with a Yin deficiency may have difficulty listening to what others have to say. They may talk excessively and dominate social situations, hurting others and straining relationships.
