The 5 Simple Steps to Maximize the Enriching and Healing Benefits of Your Qi Gong Practice

Five Ways to Prepare for a Great Qi Gong Practice

Why are some Qi Gong sessions more nourishing than others?

Even though all Qi Gong sessions can be deeply healing and energizing, you may notice that certain sessions stand out. These sessions may be extra nourishing and healing.

Don’t you want all of your Qi Gong sessions to feel deeply grounding and enlivening?

Fortunately, by taking a few simple steps to prepare for your Qi Gong practice, you can supercharge your routine in order to fully experience its benefits. This can help make all of your Qi Gong practices memorable and rewarding.

Here are five essential steps to prepare for your next Qi Gong routine.

1. Remove Distractions Before You Practice

Modern life is full of distractions and demands for your attention. Whether it’s a buzzing cell phone or a question from your partner, there are so many things that ask for your attention.

To get the most out of your Qi Gong practice, it’s important to be fully present. This means letting go of all of the external elements that could distract you.

One simple step to minimize distractions is to silence your phone or leave it in another room. Additionally, if you’re sharing space with another person, let them know that you’re about to do Qi Gong and want some alone time (unless you’re practicing together, of course).

For some people, it can be hard to set boundaries with others. If that resonates with you, this step may be extra important. Remember, there’s nothing “selfish” about taking some time and space for yourself. Not to mention, the more you’re able to recharge through your Qi Gong practice, the more vitality and abundance you’ll have within yourself to share with others.

Of course, there are certain times when it is easier to let go of distractions than other times. Therefore, try to plan your Qi Gong session at a time when there will be fewer demands on your attention. For many people, the morning is a great time to do a routine before starting other daily activities.

2. Put on Light, Lose Clothes

Qi Gong is better when you’re comfortable and able to move with ease.

Before beginning your Qi Gong practice, put on light, loose clothing that doesn’t restrict your range of movement. Also, choose clothing material that feels gentle on your skin.

In addition to being able to move freely, it’s important that you’re dressed according to the temperature. If you’re too cold, it can cause your body to become more tense, which makes it difficult to fully relax into your practice. Therefore, if it’s cold, wear warm clothes so you’re comfortable and at ease.

Similarly, if it’s hot outside, try to wear shorts and a short-sleeved shirt. Also, you can use the tips in this previous blog to help you stay cool when the temperatures are high.

3. Find a Quiet Place

It’s easier to fully immerse yourself in your practice when you’re in a quiet location.

Not only does silence help minimize distractions, but it also relaxes your nervous system. If you’re constantly being bombarded with loud sounds, it can make it difficult to focus your mind inward on your practice.

For many people, it can be helpful to practice in a room by yourself with the door closed. For others, it may be best to practice in your yard, especially if you live in a quiet area.

Another great option is to practice in nature. In forests and other places in nature, you can get away from the noise and busyness of society. You may encounter the sounds of birds and other wildlife, but generally, those sounds can have a soothing effect on your energy system.

4. Tune into Your Energy

Every person has their own unique needs. Furthermore, each person has different needs at different times.

Before beginning your practice, take a moment to close your eyes and feel what your individual needs are at the present moment. Maybe you want to invigorate your energy system in preparation for a long day ahead. Or, perhaps you want to process some challenging emotions that you present within you. If it’s the evening, maybe you want to cultivate relaxation before going to sleep.

Sometimes, your needs may be clear and obvious to you. At other times, they may be more subtle. If you’re not quite sure what you’re seeking, it can be helpful to spend a few minutes journaling before you practice. Journaling is a great way to help you gain clarity of where you’re at and where you want to go.

5. Pick a Qi Gong Routine that Aligns with Your Needs

Once you’ve tuned into your own personal energy and established your practice intentions, it’s time to bring those intentions to fruition.

As you begin practicing, try to choose exercises that align with what you’re seeking. Although most Qi Goong routines will include certain basic elements, you can always “mix and match” exercises that are right for you.

If you’re relatively new to Qi Gong, you may only have a few exercises in your “Qi toolbelt.” However, as you practice a bit more, you’ll start to acquire a wider range of Qi Gong exercises to choose from.
